You can't flesh out fictional humanity without making it somewhat grey or a comedic archetype. Otherwise you make self-unaware slop. It's not some woke conspiracy. Even Doom wrote the doomguy's backstory to be in a shitjob because he refused to shoot on civilians. The other option is to make it farcical with Duke Nukem or 40k Space Marine type of thing.
