You're looking at it all wrong. The issue isn't Amy, it's what they did to Tails.
The meta era turned him into an insecure Sally Acorn clone who just sits in a workshop building gadgets. He lost the adventurous spirit he had in the old games. He's not the kid who was inspired to be a hero like Sonic anymore.
That's where Amy comes in. You say she's pushy and an "uptight and overly-romantic type". Good. That's exactly what Tails needs. He needs someone to drag him out of the lab and back into the action. Her whole deal in SA1 was becoming a hero in her own right, craving thrills. She wouldn't put up with him just sitting on the sidelines.
It's not about her "giving up" on Sonic. It's about her finding a partner for the adventure she wants, and in doing so, she'd accidentally fix Tails' character decay. It would force him to grow a spine and be a hero again instead of just being Sonic's glorified tech support.
The dynamic itself has potential. It would course correct Tails back to being an adventurer, not the watered-down nerd he's become.

I never praised Archie. All I said is that SatAM Sally had more depth than SEGASonic's Amy Rose. A claim that has yet to be meaningfully challenged. Because it's entirely true and no one has said or argued otherwise.
Archie is terribly OOC garbage. The things I praised SatAM for (making Sonic and Sally best friends to justify in-universe why this Sonic and this Anchor get along) are not applicable to Archie Comic's Sonic the Hedgehog series.
I did not 'praise Sonally'. I said that Sonally and Sonamy both suffer from the core problem of trying to anchor the wind. A fucking terrible ship premise and an even worse character premise. At least with Sally there are things to like outside of that colossal fuck-up. Sally leads an organization, this naturally invites action-adventure stories. Sally can narratively job to Sonic because she represents a mild-mannered authority figure that accentuates Sonic's VVIND qualities. What does Amy do? Literally nothing. She isn't even a proper foil since Sonic refuses to meaningfully acknowledge her and the only thing of note she offers is her one-sided obsession with Sonic until the meta-era hacks tried rewriting her to be a completely different character since her original character premise was so unappealing it had no fans outside of those who'd been swindled by how 'kawaii' she is into wanting Sonic to be out of character and marry her because they felt bad for this poor mentally unwell girl and thought hedgehog cock might fix her. They then proceed to advocate and harass SEGA staff (see: SonAmy channel) to make these characters an official item while ignoring how flagrantly out of character it is. They take a statement by Naoto Ohshima that if Sonic was out of character, he'd want him to be with Amy, to mean that he should be with Amy since they have no respect for actual in-character Sonic the Hedgehog characterization or the wind.
Both Sally and Amy are terrible. But at least SatAM Sally has more meat to chew on.
