There are as many methods as there are writers. Here's a handy infographic to give you an idea of the broad swaths of different styles. I appear to be a "chaotic plotter". I come up with an idea for a story, then I fill my outline-editor (in this case, TreeLine) with as many related ideas as I can. My experience is that, once that reaches a sort of critical mass, I find I can write the story. Another thing I've noticed is that, once I've developed the characters sufficiently, I can just put them into situations and, essentially, watch them from the outside, and simply write down what they do. But your experience may vary, and probably will.

Why would that be a fuck-up? There's nothing wrong with fiction being character-driven. In fact, you can make up your fiction in any order you want. There are no rules only what works for you. You may be a "lawful plotter".

Chaotic plotter here. I try to plan, but I just go where the muse takes me.
