Well... It was a culmination of many small events but a major downturn of our experience as US citizens was 9/11/2001.
Everything changed after 9/11..
I was only 13, and didn't fully understand then just how significant it was and just how much things changed/were to change, but now in my late thirties it is clear just how awful things became and how it destroyed our way of life.
Personally, I believe the "terrorists" won. They not only accomplished their goal, they exceeded it. The USA, as we knew it, died that day and a more favorable outcome would have been if we were all obliterated by nukes.
