I don't feel like watching through a bunch of episodes looking for every time newtypes are explained but I looked through episode 37 and there was this line. And then you can see Lalah and Amuro doing shit that should show you what kinds of abilities newtypes have. I think you're just binging the series and not really paying attention and missing things.
