I don't think it's quite the same as a plotge where everything is linear and there's stuff you need to know in the boring parts. With something like this you can just skip the routes you don't want to read without losing anything.

I know it's common and I'm sure that's why they designed it that way, because it's conventional. I remember reading katan's review of Sakura no Uta a while back and he said a similar thing about that, that sticking to these kinds of unlock conditions and forcing the player to read parts of the game they don't care about to reach the true end is a design flaw.
