I looked up just now which parts he wrote and whaddayaknow, the part where I dropped the game is one of them. Doesn't have to be with the H-scenes necessarily, it can just be how the characters banter with each other, etc. But if they don't do that then the game just ends up being tedious and dull.

One of the reasons I recommend the anime first is that the VN is so long and convoluted to finish. I think having some idea of what's supposed to happen in the story helps make the game's structure more comprehensible. There's also shit you can miss if you don't know it's supposed to be there. I feel like the game kind of wants you to just get lost in its world for a while trying different things, etc., but that can have an adverse effect if you don't have the patience for it since it's so long to begin with. I think if you already know the story and enjoyed it, you'll be more likely to be more patient with the game and want to explore all the other things that are in it. But that's just my two cents.

Ultimately it's up to you. I can guarantee you the adaptation is good. To clarify there are actually two adaptations. There's a series by KyoAni that's two seasons (Clannad and Clannad: After Story). This is the one that's good. There's also a movie adaptation by Toei but it's just 90 minutes and doesn't follow the game's plot so avoid that.

Whenever you read the game it's mandatory that you use a walkthrough. This is the best one:

From looking at the walkthrough I assume you can see how convoluted the game is. Reading the common route and one route often has 60+ choices, so it the walkthrough is only listing the mandatory choices. Also it starts by recommending the optional baseball route, but I don't agree with that. It's not important and you can read that part whenever you want. My recommendation for the route order would be to read Fuko near the beginning to make sure you unlock certain things, and to read Nagisa last since her route segues into After Story.

Anyway I do think watching the anime first is helpful.

As for why this is:
1. There are blind choices that you have to get correct without knowing the answer
2. There are things you have to do in the common route that if you don't do, will lock you out of finishing certain routes even if you get on the route
3. There are routes that are only finished in another route so you have to read them in a certain order
4. There are routes that can only be gotten by doing things that are counterintuitive
5. There are routes for characters that you would assume do not have routes but are mandatory to finish the game
6. When you finish all the routes and enter After Story, it loads your choices from Nagisa's route. If you didn't make the correct choices in Nagisa's route you'll be locked out of the true ending and have to replay Nagisa's route trying to figure out what you did wrong, then replay After Story. There are also things here that will either unlock or cause you miss certain scenes.
