Mexico is literally the direct continuation of the northern American Spanish colonies. Or at least it's what's left of it, after the southern states left and the northern states were conquered.

Their declaration of independence was even called the "Solemn Act of the Declaration of Independence of Northern America". The name Mexico wasn't official and fairly informal at this point. It's just Spanish North America. It might not be English North America but it's still North America.
