Kind of true on both parts. I personally prefer some random chance in my games to give me something that I can crunch and chew on in my mind and then choose to gamble on according to the probabilities I end up producing. Grinding exists as a mechanism for the player to adjust the difficulty of the game according to taste. If you feel your probabilities are too dire, you can always go metaphorically pump some iron and come back a little stronger afterwards. Just as one can choose to climb a mountain with a plethora of comforts, supplies, back up plans and emergency contingencies, one can also climb the mountain with just themselves, some warm clothing and grit. Either method is valid and either method is a conscious decision made by the player. From there, any actual execution of combat is up to the game to cook up. You could literally have modifiable dice rolls here. The important part is macro level decision making and how much you the player want to influence it.
