i thought of a better event: the rape of the sabines.
basically in the founding days of rome, there were no women. it was just all men. they went out to neighboring cities in search of single women, but nobody wanted them. so they came up with a batshit crazy plan that according to legend, actually worked.
they built this huge race track called the circus maximus and they had some horses and chariots and whatnot. guys would fight to death on chariots while speeding around the track and trying not to crash into the stands with all the people.
they invited all of their neighbors to come by for free and watch some guys kill each other on horses.
the neighbors, most notably the sabines, agreed to come by, and they all left their wives at home.
so the romans and the sabines and a bunch of other guys (like over a thousand guys) were all watching these horse battles, and then the romans began to execute their plot. they very slowly and stealthily left the stadium, one by one. when they had all left without the guests noticing, they made their way to the towns and raped and kidnapped all the other guys wives. the romans went home with their new wives and they all lived happily ever after except for the sabine men who now had no bitches and ceased to be historically relevant. this is how i was told this story, but there are many different versions of it. this is probably the silliest and most improbable version.
women and men were not allowed to sit together at sporting events during the republic and empire, except at the circus maximus, because of this legend
