He's useful enough for a while, but when you finally have to kick somebody out there's little reason not to choose him. His extreme vulnerability to magic makes him useless as more and more enemy grunts get special attacks.

Still, it pays to not neglect him on purpose during the first part of the game because Monster-promoted he's a big help in the Kraken fight.
