Marisa is a pretty easy character to understand, at least on a surface level. You need to get the nuances of her character (her need to maintain specific outward facing personas, her struggles with her own humanity, her resourcefulness and ingenuity) to really get her right, but as long as you understand "good natured and somewhat brazen blond girl" you'll usually get the characterization good enough.
Reimu is a very abstract character, the floor for getting her right is much higher and it's too hard to pin her exact character for a single caricature to really feel correct. It makes her unfortunately feel very inconsistent from work to work.
