Their interest level might be exaggerated for the plot of the films. The xenomorphs are something theyd like to have, but not really worth moving heaven and earth for. Maybe worth the crew of a freighter, or a couple dead colonists, or a lot of dead lifers, but not much more than that. Burke spells it out to Ripley, bringing back live specimens was an opportunity worth "millions". For comparison, the Nostromo was said to be worth 42 Million (adjusted) dollars. So the creature was considered valuable, but not obscenely so.
