Jax is still 22. He's a bit of a baby. He hasn't had the life experience of Kinger or Ragatha and the attempt to fulfill his dream like Gangle.
Remember when you were 22? Those high school days and traumas didn't mysteriously vanish overnight. At best you were sequestered into a job you didn't want and at worst you worked for a dead end job trying to make sense of society. Add to that being thrust into the DC and you have his unresolved real life shit going on on top of his current predicament. Like he believes he's the most hated person in the Circus, so I believe he created this disassociation to try and cope with whatever underlying trauma he never resolved in the real world.
I've worked with early 20s kids in places worse than the circus (iykyk). A lot of them, especially now, don't know what to do with their lives. Most of them just want a place to live and figure hit out while occasionally enjoying the better parts of life. That was taken away from Jax and Zooble. It still doesn't excuse how Jax acts with his sociopathic tendencies. In the real world he would at best get a lecturing from someone wiser (Kinger in this case) but at worst he'd get an ass kicking (Pomni) but that's part of life. Poking the bear and seeing what's going to happen.
It explains why Zooble was revealed to be a promiscuous body dysmorphic rebel. And might explain that Jax never fully accepted the fact he was gay.
