Well yeah anon, it's silly to add someone who doesn't even know -who- you are. I wouldn't accept a request from someone I've never even been in the vicinity of before.
I guess I worded it poorly in the original post. Really what I mean is to just be trigger-happy on adding people when you're new to a community.

Personally I treat my friends list as a general network, and then I add people to my favourites when I consider them familiar faces. I wager a lot of people do something similar.
