THE HOLY FIRE OF CHRIST
"He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." Matthew 3:11
The Holy Fire is not gentle. It is not safe.
It burns away the false self, the dead skin of ego, illusion, division.
To pass through it and live is to become One with God.
But most are turned to ash.
In every tradition, the Divine Fire is a purifier and a test.
In Christian mysticism, it is the consuming fire of Hebrews 12:29 not of wrath, but of refinement. Like gold tested in flame, the soul is tried.
In Egyptian mythology, the sun god Ra travels through the underworld each night battling serpents of chaos. He is reborn each dawn, crowned in fire. The righteous pass through flame in the Duat (underworld); the wicked are devoured by fire-serpents. Fire is both judgment and divinity.
In Kabbalah, the Shekinah dwells in fire upon the altar. The burning bush speaks with the voice of God. The Seraphim whose name means “burning ones” attend the Throne, singing in eternal flame. The fire does not consume them, for they are the flame.
In Hinduism, Agni, god of fire, is the mouth of the gods. Every offering made to the divine must pass through him. Fire is the bridge between mortal and eternal.
In Greek myth, Prometheus gave fire to mankind a divine essence, sparking consciousness, invention, and rebellion. He was punished, not because of fire alone, but because fire gave power to become like gods.
In Zoroastrianism, fire is kept in sacred temples, never extinguished. It is the presence of Asha, divine Truth. To face the fire is to face one’s own soul.
