It's EARLIER in the comic where Batman is a sociopath who uses the father and son as bait for the Joker and tells Superman that he'll basically let the father die and terrify the kid into never becoming a criminal. (note: the dad is cripplingly poor and had to take money from the Joker just so he could give his kid more than an empty can of food for Christmas).
