Today was about reviewing the Writer's Market so that I could realistically know what to expect. Not just in terms of individual publication standards, but also in regards to a specific company's voice.
This publication doesn't want horror stories. This one wants adult focus or upper end young adult focus. This publisher wants content written for female audiences, but they don't want lesbian relationships unless they're written by women.
I've likely written down only a third of the viable options for a first-time author. And I haven't made it as far as reviewing any publisher's specific catalogues. I can't stop and read every book, nor could I rewrite my entire story to cater to a specific publisher, but I can get a better feel for what they are looking for.
