They're really close to being excellent and definitely worth playing. Ultimately what it comes down to is that they're aesthetically pretty lazy. It's like the people working on the games either forgot or never realized that Kanto is supposed to be an urban center and its outskirts, so they surrounded everything from Pewter to Saffron with those same generic trees. Seriously, when people call Kanto "the generic region", I can't help thinking that FRLG is what their minds are picturing.

The Sevii Islands are awesome, but I wish the trainers there were a bit more challenging and that there were maybe one or two more big dungeons to add some heft to them. The E4 rematches were great bonus bosses to cap it all off, but I generally hate when postgame content feels like box ticking exercises rather than an actual challenge.
