The new OST sucked. It sounds like it was made by an amateur who wanted to make music for a TV show or movie. There are so many shitty flourishes that shouldn't be there that kill the intensity of the original tracks and sound awful when looped. The composer clearly didn't understand the assignment.

Literally the only thing I give HG/SS shit for is its soundtrack. A lot of the songs just don't sound great and miss what the originals were going for. Not all of them, but enough where it's notable, and the only thing that really detracts from them for me.

I remember coming home after school in September 2004, I had just started 5th grade, and I found FireRed and LeafGreen hanging in a bag by the door for me and my brother. My mom had picked them up.

I hadn't played much of actual Gen I, so this was my first time getting to really go through it. I remember the things that made an impression on me were all the help systems.
>The blue help menus that could be brought up with L and R
>The short video replays of your most recent actions after loading a save
>The Teachy TV with its tutorial videos with Primo
>Items now all had sprites
>The font color varied depending on whether you were playing as a girl or a boy
And other things like the TM Case which played an animation of your Pokémon learning the move, the Berry Pouch, the included Wireless Adapter and all the weird extra content like the minigames on the Sevii Islands or Trainer Tower.

They feel so odd, but I don't have any major complaints even having played actual Gen I since.

Not him, but I think that the HGSS OST doesn't sound as good for a first time listener as the original GSC soundtrack does. Case in point being National Park, one of the most iconic themes. In HGSS, there's a lot of flourish and meandering, it feels very much like a cover, remix, or homage to a song that exists rather than being simply updated for being on new hardware. It feels like much of the OST was made from the perspective of being for returning players, and I think that's alright because I played the original and have those memories.

No, the real sin is that the GB Sounds is locked to the very end of the game after you get 16 badges. It's really the type of thing that should have been available from the start.

I wouldn't say that. Gen I music compared to Gen II sounds emptier. Compare the final rival battle theme to anything in Gen II, and there's not much of a backing melody or bassline. FRLG, in spite of being on the GBA with its shitty sound chip, sounds better than most of the music from RSE because they're imitating the high frequencies of the originals to get a clearer sound while also filling up some of that empty space the Gen I music had to make it sound more in line with the more modern compositions.

Not true, I can give praise where praise is due, and I can be critical of things I liked.
FRLG introduced the Vs. Seeker which is the best way to rebattle Trainers, but it also missed out on including Gym Leader rematches.
Walking Pokémon in HGSS is a neat inclusion, but it should have been made optional, and there are also more mandatory sections in the story that were once optional.
SV being open is an inherent improvement what the series had been doing for a while, and all the extra battles in the post-game are cool, but it's visual garbage.

These graphics always seem to miss the point on why the modern games feel so soulless. Back in RBY, every single pokemon felt important; the 151 all felt as equal, even with the legendaries there to chase after. It was "Gotta Catch 'em All" not just for completions sake, but because they were all special in some way as part of the world, and you had to learn about all of them to truly call yourself a Pokemon Master, not just because you caught the single strongest one.

The modern franchise in comparison just makes 3 starters + 15 legendaries/mythics to shill for merchandise, and they dont give a fuck if you care or even see the 60 filler slopmons they churn out to pad the empty space between routes. The franchise just hollowed itself out of its own core principles.

I started with gen 5 and didn't play gen 1 until I was an adult. it instantly shot up into my top three gens.
pokemon has evolved into its own subgenre with its own rules for game design but gen 1 feels the most like a proper RPG. every mon and mechanic is purposeful.
the atmosphere is also great. gen 1 kanto isn't a utopia like later gens, it's a polluted urban sprawl. there's gambling. trainers use whips. there's a whole haunted tower with possessed trainers and multiple abandoned buildings. it feels like a real place, like the real world but with the addition of monsters.and I think having this dangerous world enhances the series' theme about humans and pokemon protecting each other.

They're really close to being excellent and definitely worth playing. Ultimately what it comes down to is that they're aesthetically pretty lazy. It's like the people working on the games either forgot or never realized that Kanto is supposed to be an urban center and its outskirts, so they surrounded everything from Pewter to Saffron with those same generic trees. Seriously, when people call Kanto "the generic region", I can't help thinking that FRLG is what their minds are picturing.

The Sevii Islands are awesome, but I wish the trainers there were a bit more challenging and that there were maybe one or two more big dungeons to add some heft to them. The E4 rematches were great bonus bosses to cap it all off, but I generally hate when postgame content feels like box ticking exercises rather than an actual challenge.

Nah, there are some parts of Kanto that fall flat compared to the original. Look at Pewter City for example. The city looked rocky and matched the gym type in RBY, but you see no traces of it in the remake. Most of Kanto is also depicted as rural in the remake, contrasting with RBY's urban setting.

It's weird because GF is in Tokyo and Kanto was designed after its real-life counterpart. It's like they never went outside or just got too lazy at making city tiles and just added grass/trees to wrap it up.

I compare FRLG with RS's routes and sprite sheets and it becomes obvious to me they weren't GBA games in the same capacity. I would've loved to have seen the maps redesigned rather than the new-coat-of-paint thing.

But that probably runs counter to what Nintendo remakes like to do. And GF probably wanted to "get things right for once" because the originals were such an embarrassing mess.

Nah, that was Masuda's idea. Tajiri wanted a grandiose romp through all of PokeJapan, and Kanto was comically truncated in that original vision.
But when Tajiri was fumbling so hard with game development that he couldn't meet his personal deadline, he completely gave up and it was up to Masuda to take charge and repurpose the game into something that was actually able to be made and released in order to strike while the iron was still hot.
Masuda's Kanto fixation continued long after this, of course, as seen with such famous instances like DP's Pokedex being exactly 151, just like Kanto, BW being a soft reboot full of Kanto expies, XY being full of direct Kanto throwbacks and tons of Mega Evolutions for Kanto mons, basically unknowingly fulfilling the PokeGod dreams of Pokemania kids at long last, and the list goes on.
