IndyCar has the same problem and it's a massive barrier to new fans. This is one area where F1 really gets it right. The team/primary sponsor is far, far more recognizable than the car number and both cars (usually) being the same color week to week helps easily identify them. I don't think NASCAR needs to have team colors or anything, but it would be really nice if they could at least attract full season sponsors like back in the day. The Dupont/GM Goodwrench/Tide/M&Ms etc liveries were so iconic and easy to spot even in the wide shots that showed the entire field that you immediately knew who you were looking at and what was going on. Now I find myself looking at the pylon and counting places all the time just to figure out who is where. It makes it extremely hard for someone new to racing to identify and pick a car/driver to follow and that's not good since NASCAR is likely to be someone's first experience with racing.
