Combination of both. The Keyblade (keyblades in general, really) are powerful magical weapons but Sora's also a retarded savant who's really fucking good at improvising. Literally all of his abilities are shit he comes up with on the fly, canonically, besides the stuff like magic directly taught by someone else. Even the data clone of him was good at this.

It's worth noting, though, that being disarmed is always one of his weaknesses. He gets disarmed in 1 and is stuck using weaker magic with a wooden sword that literally can't hurt enemies, he gets disarmed in 2 and is almost beaten before he summons the keyblade back, he spergs out and tries to beat Davy Jones up with his fists in 3 and it doesn't work at all, and he can get disarmed in 3's DLC and you're basically defenseless until you recover The Keyblade.
