Have you considered the fact that it's a video game and characters don't have the same durability as real life humans? Or the fact that a lot of enemies in games that use swords are either armored or fantastical creatures with tough hides? This means that you need a thicker, heavier weapon that's durable and can be used as a shitty bludgeon in case it can't cut through something. There's three different "kinds" of keyblades.

The Keyblade is the one in OP, which is a special, semisentient weapon that chooses its wielder. It has a counterpart in the form of Kingdom Key D. The main difference is that, as far as we know, these two are the only ones capable of locking up worlds or sealing the Door to Darkness when some retard opens it, since they're created by the hearts of the worlds themselves.
The χ-blade is the clusterfuckyou nuke button that gets created when someone in trying to summon Kingdom Hearts.

The Keyblade does help but it's mostly on Sora, yeah. Riku is a pretty good point of comparison: for a good portion of the series Riku arguably has more technical skill than Sora (and you can see in particular in his KH1 moveset that Sora has no idea what he's doing and he's winging it, a detail I particularly like), but he bottlenecks early because he's more of a loner. Sora doesn't have this limitation since he has a natural talent for bonding with others, which in turn strengthens his heart and increases his raw power.
Basically, when Sora says his friends are his power he does mean it.
Then there's the whole business with Ventus' heart being linked to his and all that further adds to his strength.

Any of the Onimusha weapons, especially Raizen since it was such a cool lighting katana. My child brain was enamored by these weapons and everything from the intros to the sounds they make as you're striking an enemy and even how you can upgrade them seemed so cool to me at the time. The Energy Sword is not a sword its functionally a dagger, it just called that because Bungie didn't think "energy dagger" has the same ring to it as "energy sword"
