I had to learn it the hard way, I remember shitting on gabe for his "actually money is what steers work in communities" comment when they tried to do paid mods and thought it was jewish bullshit as I was a small modder at the time, but the more I work in way bigger projects and as I get older with less time and more responsibilities I start to see where he was coming from, misdirected and badly displayed but I see what he had in mind now.
Money steers work in smaller non professional communities to the point where they can release and do amazing stuff at a much higher output rate and/or quality because money allows them to focus on it instead of, for example, having to wage 70 hours a week on a second shitty mcjob that you HAD to get just to pay your rent despite being way below your skill and training.
Gabe and Valve are experts on this because their entire company was built by hiring and working with modders, students doing passion projects and indies, still is.
Patreon and kickstarter are a perfect example of both sides of the coin with this approach, they have enabled a ton of people to pursue stuff like this but they've also enabled a bunch of lazy faggots siphoning money for 1 hour of work every 3 weeks.
