Cassava has two varieties, sweet and bitter.
All commercially available cassava is the sweet type. It's dangerous only if you eat it raw, but it's totally safe to eat if you peel away the skin and boil it for 30 minutes. Tapioca is a processed product from that so you've got nothing to worry about.
The bitter cassava, that's the one you've got to worry about, because that one is always poisonous and in fact releases even more cyanide when boiled. But you will never encounter the bitter cassava unless you are buying your food on some shady Venezuelan wet market or some shit like that.
And yes boba tea always comes with the little tapioca balls you are getting scammed otherwise.
