I'd meant to reply to >>96375595, sorry. Even the Sierra Nevadas are mostly forested on the rainward side. But yeah: what's most interesting about mountains, to me, are their extremes. Driving from the Mojave desert up into the mountains, you start out in sage and creosote desert with scorching hot sand. Twenty minutes later you're surrounded by joshua trees. Twenty minutes after that? Pine forest. Keep going up and you hit the sequoias--giant redwoods. Further still you're in the alpine, and then up above the treeline.

There's just a hell of a lot more to mountains than stone outcrops.
