What are dwarves' best natural allies? My vote goes to kobolds.

Except that dwarves are, in traditional fantasy, very honorable and courageous, whereas kobolds are duplicitous and craven. And rather than being allies because they share 'interests', they'd be rivals because they're competing for the same resources. Indeed, I have no doubt that the average dwarf hates kobolds far more than he hates elves, especially because kobolds tend to precipitate the arrival of a dragon, which a dwarf DEFINITELY doesn't want to deal with.

The problem with Kobolds is that they're a competitor to Dwarves. They both have the same preference for underground territory, and worse still, Kobolds like Dragons who like to claim Dwarf homes at lairs.

My own assumption would actually be Cloud Giants or Goliaths. Reasons being the following:
>They live atop of mountains, whereas Dwarves live inside of them. This puts them in close proximity to each other, but doesn't have them competing for territory.
>Goliaths are a tall and strong race, but lack industry and knowledge. Dwarven steel would be a great boon to them, and they could keep the mountains clear of threats for the Dwarves.
>Cloud Giants on the other hand are a very studious and intelligent race, and do have a taste for the finer gems and metals, but lack the means to acquire them in the quantities desired. Though not a particularly martial race, they are skillful at enchanting items, which would synergize well with Dwarves, and they could use the armor too.

As for people living INSIDE of of the mountainhomes with the Dwarves, I would actually suggest someone small who won't take up much room. Inchlings, borrowers, that sort of thing.

I don't doubt that kobolds work hard, and certainly in 3.5 they would've wanted to emphasize their no-fun-allowed nature to differentiate them from goblins. But "duplicitous" and "prankstery" are not the same. Kobolds are indeed duplicitous - their favorite thing is literally building traps! And being even weaker than goblins, they definitely aren't going to have the bravado that dwarves do.

But IMO the best ally of dwarves, if humans aren't an option as a cop-out, would probably be Goliaths like >>96342706 says or, if this isn't DnD and they aren't a thing, probably gnomes. Not only similar in stature and appearance, gnomes traditionally dwell in hills and woods, and so would be able to live in the same area as dwarves without competing for space. And, being naturally gifted at magic but not being so industrious as dwarves, they'd have a lot to gain from cooperation. I don't go in for artificer style gnomes as much, but if you do include those, all the better that dwarves should have such a ready market for their metals and minerals.

Warcraft and Warlords seemingly independently putting dwarves on griffins made me believe that it was just a natural pairing, so I always lean towards that.

Other than that I like boars, they can sit quite low, be sturdy. Probably my main preference for a land mount.
Some larger sturdier wolves seem cool too sometimes, but probably best to have a non carnivore war mount.

I have a story idea and one of the characters is a female dwarf. But I'm trying to think of a good, solid reason why a female dwarf would be out adventuring in the world.
Three ideas come to mind off the bat.
One: She murdered someone who was going to marry into her clan to stop them from gaining clan secrets and sully the good name of her clan.
Two, she steals a powerful relic from her clan for much the same reason as above
Three, she's a priestess on a pilgrimage.
There's lots of motivations out there, trying to find one that feels, dwarf.

To be honest I was trying to think of something that wasn't a tragic backstory to go out into the world. The main companion I have in mind is a priest of the god of death, as in they give last rights and perform rituals/prayers to sanctify the dead against dark powers taking over their corpse, who is a happy, upbeat, and generally gregarious sort of priest.
Things are still in the fleshing out stage of things.
I may switch though and make the companion a warrior of some kind because ya can't go wrong with the classic beefy warrior and back line female companion.

If one likes engaging with the game earnestly, then when one wants to play a female character, they'll envision them as a character in which the "female" part isn't just writing down a gender on a sheet, but informs the character and their history. That's how I'd do it at least. If I wanna play a female character, they'll do stuff and go on adventures and be cool, but what they do and how they do it will not be the same as a male character.

The "female character" isn't just going to be a one dimensional character. Her being a female dwarf is going to help inform her story, her history, her relationship with her people, why she's even out in the world to begin with. Thinking men and women can do everything equally is a silly notion that makes no real distinction between a male or a female other than what their plumbing is.
It's got nothing to do with politics/beliefs and everything to do with an aspect of the character that makes the whole of the character. At least, I would like to think so.

On the other hand, if my story were going to take place in a more sci-fi type of setting, with guns and all manner of tech being common place, the female aspect to her character would not play as much a role in her interactions with the world. Ya see what I'm driving at?

While it's true that dwarfs aren't human, they're dwarfs, their culture and mindset should be, imo, alien to that of humans.
But it has more to do with the reality of that world.
And in a world where stepping outside your door can get you eaten by a T-rex, or a dragon, or a T-Rex dragon, the main source of keeping your numbers up, i.e. females are not going to be a common sight as an adventurer or mercenary or the like. In such a setting it's simply another vehicle for the character to interact with, and be interacted with, by the world at large.

As an Appalachia burger, I do wish people would play more into the idea of forested mountains that have elves on top and dwarves beneath. So many fantasy mountains are inhospitable craggy peaks and so many fantasy forests are flatlands covered in overgrowth.
I want the elves keeping watch on the surrounding woodland from the high vantage point, able to use the trees and vines to scale the cliffs and ledges faster than any rock-climber with all the rope they want, all while the dwarves turn the earth beneath into sturdy strongholds and an industry of material production. Their combined standards of artistry and craftsmanship make unparalleled equipment in both form and function, and a collaboration of magical understanding brings runecraft and spellcasting to new heights.
The forces of evil are all for invading one or the other to plunder their goods, that is until they hail for aid. You're trying to sap and breach into a dwarven hall blocked by a shield wall and suddenly a hail of elven arrow-fire forces you to cede ground in a retreat. You're trying to navigate the woods to hunt down elven skirmishers when suddenly shock troops of dwarves emerge from hidden passages to obliterate your stragglers and prove a threat to your remaining force.

For defensive fighting in tunnels of their own making dwarves could have the advantage of drill discipline that lets them get used to exact dimmensions of the space and how to move there with the weapon. Precise swings that stay clear of colliding with walls by fraction of an inch. Home gound advantage turned into martial art passed down the generations.

Alternatively, tradition of switching between halberd and axe by using same weapon head on different pole lengths. Some weapon heads could be personalized and highly decorated heirlooms. And adventurers living outside of dwarven community can be even more individualist using "unusual" weapons.

The idea of a subterranean empire doesn't scale super well when you run out of subterranean to expand into without digging through outer space. Even if it's something like an asteroid belt of stony strongholds, you need to leave the mountain home in order to go to the next one. You could set up some sort of network of portals that tunnels through an under-plane and back into reality like some cross between Minecraft Nether and Warhammer Warp, but the wormhole network idea is usually claimed by peak-empire elves, and dwarves loathe to be copycats. So they just have like... a single world they don't want to leave because that's where they're strongest.

They have clever things like modular weapons, basic one is axehead but you can easily swap the handle for longer one (or maybe telescope system) and put on speartip on top of that, so you always have weapon to use from caves to plains. Being dwarven techonology, it's naturally very strong locking system so it does not break.

Mostly a joke. Those are pretty, too. But nothing beats the Sierra Nevadas. When you finish the climb to the top of this pass and look down on the terraced lakes still covered in ice in June? It's my very-favorite place on Earth. This is like a... 270 degree view? I dunno it's weird. The climb up is on the left. It's 5 miles during which you go 1 foot up for every 3 feet forward. The right side is below the pass at almost 11k feet of elevation.

Just wanted to offer more examples where the greenery of mountains doesn't necessarily stop at a treeline of hardy junipers. Every dwarf wants their hold to look like the monolithic skullcap and face of their ancestor emerging from the earth, but none of them want to try cordoning off the trees so the face has a luxurious beard that contrasts the stone and can move in the breeze.

Driving from the Mojave desert up into the mountains, you start out in sage and creosote desert with scorching hot sand. Twenty minutes later you're surrounded by joshua trees. Twenty minutes after that? Pine forest. Keep going up and you hit the sequoias--giant redwoods. Further still you're in the alpine, and then up above the treeline.

There's just a hell of a lot more to mountains than stone outcrops.

Merfolk. Dwarves live in the mountains and don't bother much with ships or fishing, dwarves could arm merfolk so they could fight against the massive navies of the elves and humans and on the flipside the merfolk agree to leave the tiny dwarf seafleet alone. Probably has the highest possibility of a long term alliance.
Centaur/orcs/gnolls. They're raiders who live in the plains and dwarves live in mountain fortresses, dwarves could arm them and use them as a counterweight to the various other races who live in the plains and forests, in exchange they allow safe travel of dwarf merchants through their lands. The alliances would be fragile and probably change every time a tribal leader died so the dwarves would have to constantly change who they support to play all sides against each other.
Humans. Humans grow food, dwarves offer protection. Lasts until humans grow too big for their birches and try to overthrow their dwarf overlords., the dwarves either cut their losses and deal with the new human nation or launch a costly war to crush the revolution.
Wood Elves. Elves trade wood and food, dwarves trade metal goods.In theory it could last forever but at some point the dwarf industry will need more wood than the elves are willing to sell and some kind of war will break out.
Kobolds, goblins and other cave dwellers would be the natural enemies of dwarves because they compete for the same living space.

I think the big issue is that dwarves, to me at least, have this reputation of being static trope packages despite clearly having differing cultures in the various regions they hail from. They are stout, strong (especially for their height), durable, and resourceful craftsmen if not guilds on a borderline industrial scale. They can be mining coal, copper, or chalcedony, the normalfag part of me often boils it down to mining. I know logically that different lumber has different properties that make them more or less suitable for construction, charcoal, carving, etc, but since that's not my autism I see chopping pines for shipbuilding and mahogany for high-quality furniture as the same industry that sell different things to different people.
Also, no matter if the mountain is covered in air, trees, or ocean (Hawaiian dwarves would be interesting), the point on space dwarves was that the logical progression of their territorial expansion is quite literally snared by the etymology: territory, as in a district of the world. They set up an underground base and mine outwards to make new bases. Until they decide to build Deep Rock Galactic space drills to find extraterrestrial resources to dig up, they're generally fine with hollowing out the one rock they already have.

I'm glad dwarves are real.

A bit of an update on the dwarf gal I've hired an artist to create for me.
I'm thinking of naming her Freya, known as the "Forgebreaker" and it is because of this she, while not exiled per say, was sent off to her people's equivalent of a convent. And, she took quite well to the scholarly, spiritual life.
Going off of what anon here >>96370925 and >>96371165 said her motivation to get out from the convent is a letter detailing some duty she must perform for her clan. I'm thinking it was a failed expedition and she needs to get some kind of regalia back.
Now I'm thinking of some traveling companions. Unsure if there will be a romantic interest, also unsure of companions. I am thinking another dwarf, or perhaps even an elf, and a human.

On that note, other than ancestor worship, what might be another aspect to dwarf religion? What kind of gods would they worship? I know in Warhammer Fantasy there's Grungni, god of crafting, Valyaa, goddess of hearth and home, and Grimnir, god of war/grudges.
What about a death god? Like the dwarfish take on Mor from Warhammer?

What if dwarves cremate their dead by dropping them in to the lava so they kind of "return to stone"? Best way would be to grind their bones between moving tectonic plates but that's kinda difficult...

If i am going to make ancestor worshipping dwarves they are going to rever their written language as a means for their ancestors to communicate with them. Not only would they revere the words their direct ancestors but famous philosophers, rulers, warriors and others would also be looked at with religious reverence.
I imagine great mausoleum/libraries full of books, scrolls, and tablets with librarian priests (similar to catholic monks) preserving and copying the knowledge of the dead. It would also double as a place of learning where any dwarf may enter and read the words of the great and small.
I'd also imagine each dwarf would also carry a diary or journal to record the knowledge/story of their life for future generations. Death would see cremation of the body to little fanfare but their journal would be entered into one of the great libraries in a grand funeral where it will be copied and illuminated.
Specific works and specific dwarves would be more famous than others no doubt, I think they would constantly be quoting famous lines from great books.

one I've been sitting on for a while now is the "House of Silk" (dwarven name pending) with their main thing being a large textiles industry which is almost entirely supported by a giant spider matriarch the hold made a pact with shortly after it's founding. not sure how open I want them to be about that though, on one hand a wealthy and prestigious hold trying to hide a dark secret is a classic, but having the matriarch being a more integrated part of the hold could have some interesting dynamics

The reason for the rise of patriarchy in settled societies is due to men contributing more calories to the household. Dwarves don't produce their own food [1], thus you would have a gender egalitarian culture because women can contribute much the same as men, similar to how the rise of gender equality in our society took place alongside the mechanization of agriculture and its precipitous decline as a part of the work force.

Pulling from Warhammer Fantasy here, but when Felix goes to the Slayer hold he's surprised to find that there are dwarfs outside the hold tending to flocks like sheep and goats, and herds like cattle. It surprises him because he never thought about it, since he was usually only in the company of other Slayers and it was his first time seeing the actual domestic side of the dwarfs.

Hold made in the midst of a knotted mess of petrified forest. Trees so hardened to stonelike strength and consistency that only the dwarves could dig into them and live there.
