Expansion #1:
The heroes face an evil they can not possibly win against. They spend an entire expansion preparing to fight it, only to fail at the very end. The bad guy lets them live, confident in his victory.
Expansion #2:
In their desperation, the heroes turn to the Infinite Dragonflight. The Infinite Dragonflight has swayed away from their old ways, softened by MoP -> Legion Remix. The heroes coax and coerce the Infinite Dragonflight into helping them pillage other timelines, scavenging powerful artifacts from every possible corner of the world. This includes a raid for every class, where we take back our Legion artifacts from our former selves. It culminates in the Pillaging of Pandaria, where incredibly powerful fragments of the Celestials are stolen from the Pandaren. The expansion ends with a raid on the Temple of the Jade Serpent, with Aya Ya, avatar of Yu'lon incarnate, as the final boss.
Expansion #3:
Having claimed every notable object they could possibly garner from dozens of different timelines, the heroes return to face the big bad guy. A cataclysmic clash between the two immensely-powerful factions rends the world asunder. Ultimately, at great cost (many named characters dying), the heroes are triumphant. They return to their homes, to rebuild; but they find themselves increasingly distant from the ones they once held dear. In the end, they sacrificed everything in order to attain ultimate victory. They became the evil they once swore to fight against. Their time of adventuring is over. Now comes the time for...
