Hanfu is fake as fuck and is a recent cosplay trend.

Chinese nationalists were upset with the ACTUAL TRADITIONAL CHINESE clothes that was selected for world leaders to wear during the APEC meeting in 2001. The clothes in question is called the "magua" and has ties to back when China was under Manchu rule and this rubbed them the wrong way since so much of Chinese clothes and culture actually comes from Manchus; not to mention influences from other non-chinese invaders who conquered China (Basically, China isn't the originators of Asian culture that they like to convince ignorant westerners of. Much of it comes from their non-Chinese dynasties that ruled China through its history).

Thus some Chinese nationalists decided to recreate a 'modern take' on Chinese clothes, trying to recast other invading cultures clothes as their own. They even recreated a bunch of traditions and rituals to go with it--aka, they are larping.

You can also blame the CCP for destroying China's history and culture during the "Cultural Revolution" for motivating these Chinese to engage in fantasy cosplay as they lost touch with their true past history and its caused a great deal of confusion in China as to what their actual history and customs are and where they come from. This is also drives many Chinese to (wrongly) claim they invented everything.

Like with everything from China, its fake counterfeit bullshit.

Reminder: Hanfu is fake.
Its a larp motivated by the bitter sentiment of the Chinese youth who resent the fact that their Chinese culture was brought to China by its numerous foreign conquerors over Chinas entire existence, especially the Manchus.
