Depends on what you mean by discard. At the very least, they can make you an outgroup as a way of facilitating a tighter ingroup. Normies do this all the time with people at the bottom of the pecking order of their social circle: these individuals are often the butt of jokes or only kept around to be exploited for their resources like bringing beer to a party or car rides. They are also exploited for the purposes of self-elevation on the social totem pole, i.e., "I look good because my friend is uglier than me". Women do that latter one a lot by keeping an uglier girl around as the designated ugly friend.
