Depends on how much and what kind of finish. Poly is a bitch to sand down but it is doable, that’s only half the battle though. I’m painting just my headstock on my JM and that alone has been a bit of an odyssey. If you do go that route, StewMac has a literal idiot proof guide on painting with steps for refinishing as well. You should check out the end of the third video to get an idea of just how nice a finish you can expect, and this is with spray cans, no fancy equipment needed aside from a decent sander in your case.

She’s getting there. First wet sand in complete, spraying the last few coats of clear before final wet sand, cure break and then final buff out.
