Most people are more inclined to play characters that share their gender. This is just instinctual because it's way more immersive. Even if there's gameplay difference, there are way more Sub Zero / Scorpion mains over Sonya Blade.
Since gaming is male dominated, there's way more people who picked male characters over female.
One of the first reason why they added female character option was for the mass appeal so the girl gamers can immerse better with the game.
I don't know why, but only in 4chan the FemMC players are trying to make it so that the men who played as a woman are the majority. Or at the very least, makes up 50% of the playerbase.
Even though this is not the case everywhere else.
I don't even see the appeal of exclusively playing as a woman. Was it just porn addiction? Literally every one who played as a woman in Bethesda games always wear skimpy outfits with dozens sex mods and the like.
Why don't just play as a guy and have female companions? IDGI.
