I think I read an anecdote about Shigeru Miyamoto once, he was saying that as the team worked on the game for 1-2 years, they would lose sight of the "bigger picture" and start believing that every single part of the game mattered equally and required an equal amount of time and effort. When that happened he would give them a month off or something, so they can come back to the project with fresh eyes and see that some parts aren't really relevant in the grand scheme of things.
Consider this painting, the people in the background aren't drawn with as much detail as the Jester, they're slightly "smudged" or "blurry". The jester is the centerpiece, and putting less detail in the background actually helps frame him better.
Of course what's "important to you" can be different from someone else, and I think focusing only on the relevant parts to you can help shape your identity as an artist. For most video games maybe the water in the background isn't that important so they choose a cheap water texture and call it a day, while for you maybe it's very important so you make all your water look impeccable. (At the cost of something else.) People in time will notice that you're a water guy who pours a lot of love into his water and not crummy pokemon creatures.
