I know we're talking about a Universal theme park, but I'm sure the merchandising rights for Marvel characters still have to go through Disney.

Marvel Hero Island was created in 1999, a decade before Disney's takeover. They still have the same rides, but they're unable to make any new additions.

I understand that the existing contracts involving the Spider-Man ride also mean that Disney can't have a Spider-Man ride in Orlando.
