It's already unironically over.

Policy takes decades to show effect, likewise it takes decades to undo bad prior policy. The US can barely string together a coherent policy (only to undo it 4 years later). China built and thought long-term for 25 years, they now have the lead in everything since energy is the very essence of civilization: with it, you can do anything. Go read some early scifi authors, they knew what was up.

It's not a matter of "renewables yes/no", it's a clear FACT that the US needs to pull everything (including the kitchen sink) out to catch up with China again. Renewables, nuclear, oil, everything. You don't beat an exponential with a linear. But they won't, because they're essentially in a soft civil war: too busy trying to gain control at home to notice they're losing control abroad.

It's truly baffling to see an Empire just shrug and give up its place, so I'm betting the US will start a war in a few years as it rapidbly becomes clear it's "now or never". Russia's doing the same thing in Ukraine btw.
