I'm still banking on the theory that because Susie's equipment can't be forcibly removed (you can only switch pieces, but not fully strip her), she won't equip some of her weaker equipment like the starting ax, and how her defensive equipment when she leaves your party in Chapter 1 is actually translated to her fight, she'll be balls off the walls difficult in the inevitable rematch if you've been keeping her equipment up to date
