Being prepared to deal with the unexpected is part of the fun. Stuff like saving big cooldowns to really sticky situations or always have a escape route in mind when approaching a group of mobs, etc.
With that said, Epoch's hardcore mode is a bad joke. You can group and trade with non-hardcore character, there is no reason to bother with it.
