Sonic the Hedgehog got redesigned for Sonic Adventure to both help adjust to 3d limitations of the time and due to it being a soft-reboot. This became the new default for the new "modern" era. On the other side of the spectrum, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. See the Sonic Boom redesigns.
But let's not beat around the bush here. The Crash 4 redesigns were not only unnecessary but just plain bad compared to the classic designs. At least the Titan games had different gameplay.
