Fluoride is one of the halogens on the periodic table. Chemistry 101 tells us that elements from the same column or "group" tend to have similar chemical properties because the have the same number of electrons on their outer shell; thus, they are seeking the same oxidative or reductive state.

Fluorine is not an essential nutrient. Iodine and chloride, on the other hand, are (both halogens). Fluorine/fluoride compete for chemical reactions with iodine and chloride in the body. Basically, if you consume fluoride in large enough amounts, it boxes out the iodine and chloride which leads to serious health problems. This also applies to bromine, which is in a lot of tap water.

Most people these days are iodine deficient and suffer thyroid problems as a result. Iodine is also necessary for the functioning of every cell in your body, and chloride is critical for nerve function.
