if you feel comfortable with it then custom is the way to go. long blade + critical striking is the strongest combo but i wouldn't worry too much about being too strong the game can be pretty tuff and the starting dungeon is a filter. zaric has a video on starting daggerfall which has some good class building pointers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvzuSA9HOI8
