Best bet is to look for anything that was released by MANGA! video in the 80s and 90s.

>Perfect Blue
>Street Fighter II: The Animated Series

None of these hit EXACTLY the same as VHD:BL, but they're in a similar vein- cutting edge anime with a vision before it became static formulaic tripe in the late 2000s. Also give the original Vampire Hunter D a watch.

I agree with you, the Netflix adaptation was (as expected) terrible and gay. The 70s one is a bit dated. The OVAs from the late 80s are pure anime kino.
