The laser is a diode laser, which was a pretty flashy and advanced thing for the time (compare to all of those big helium neon lasers with big battery packs), but part of them being advanced was that you could do them cheaply, and these companies would almost certainly make sure to make them as cheap as they could.

Conceptually, I like it. Compact .25 with a laser on it? Sounds good, someone should make a good one, with modern diodes and batteries you could make the laser tiny.
