Beautiful I wake up to still see this nice thread up

The reason these characters never go anywhere is because good design don't necessarily translate into gameplay.

Sonic has the base gameplay.
Tails has flying.
Knuckles has gliding and climbing.

What could surge do differently? Nothing, in the end is just a reskin like Shadow/Blaze to Sonic and Cream to Tails.
