It was genuinely insane doing a full playthrough of Transformed and then a full run of Team Sonic Racing right after.
My feelings on that game used to be just that of indifference and disappointment, but fully playing through all of that game made me unironically hate it. It's actually criminal how many things they downgraded from Transformed.
And I ain't even talking the lack of transformations, it literally just plays worse in just about every way and a lot of races can feel like coin flips because your teammate CPUs are pants on head stupid, so you gotta constantly babysit them and just kinda hope for the best. Actual shit game, no clue how it even remotely got that bad.

Hmmm, yeah, Dino Jungle is definitely the one track I'm not feeling. The instrumentation is nice, at least the bass, but the actual structure and melody just makes it seem generic. Since the original theme, Wicked Wild, was a much more groovy and rocking tune, I don't know why they didn't use that as context that DJ is also a much more wild and cool place than making it seem dangerous and hectic. It's a complete clash of what came before.
Kraken Bay is alright, but it still pales in comparison to the original themes.

The reason these characters never go anywhere is because good design don't necessarily translate into gameplay.

Sonic has the base gameplay.
Tails has flying.
Knuckles has gliding and climbing.

Anti-comicfags just aren't ready to accept the music that SEGA has been pushing multimedia exposure since Sonic Boom (and other titles) flopped ten years ago.

Speaking as someone who didn't get spooked by him but was easily scared as a kid, its not the eyes that are the "problem", it's the whole perspective, the fact that if you try to get behind him before his attack pattern was done he'd turn on you, and the big chase attack. I see what you're saying but this isn't really that important, I think. Unique gameplay isn't needed to justify a Sonic character nearly as much as that character's "place" in the Sonic family is. It's not up to the game designers to make the character stick (outside of making an actual good game), it's up to the writers. We already have plenty of Sonic characters with the gameplay of "Sonic + gimmick (gimmick optional)," so character dynamics are what's really important. Your argument about where a character falls into "place" among Sonic's friends is also kind of silly because there's plenty of characters who have their "place" and yet they still rarely show up anymore. So obviously it's not how well they're written that causes a character to stick around. I also doubt that most Sonic fans really care about how well a character "fits" into Sonic's friends to begin with. They just want good, memorable designs above everything else. Sure, Surge's design is certainly loud, but I don't know if I'll remember her in 20 years after IDW Sonic finally gets canned outside of the porn.

Also Surge wouldn't be able to carve her own niche since they already have several rivals/antagonists/doppelgangers for Sonic. What makes Surge worthy of adding to the game cast, other than simply being female? I think we have different criteria for what it means for a Sonic character to be successful. I don't expect any character in Sonic to be playable with any regularity partially because we had years of fans complaining "STOP ADDING ALL SONIC'S FRIENDS" every game. You forget one thing we are no longer in that decade and worse Sonic as a franchise has lost the cool factor. Seriously when was the last time this franchise was cool. And don't say the recent movie that is rehashing the story of an already ancient game. When was this franchise genuinely cool? Sonic lost his cool factor with Sonic Colors. From there on Sonic became Disney Sonic. Annoying, inoffensive, and charmless. No wonder he showed up in Disney's Wreck It Ralph for a cameo.

This franchise lost what made it stand out its cool factor. And Surge is not bringing it back since her deal is what a Failure At Life she is constantly losing because she's clumsy and trips on her face or regular water beats her. That is lame.
