Everyone always focus on the nudes and gore, but the other thing completely uncensored in this story was the human condition (even if, as you say, in a mostly pessimistic fashion), and i always loved that from this manga.
Of course, there are good people around, but most of the time we are inadvertently surrounded by layers and layers of apathy, cynicism and violence (i.e. we're assholes), so when faced with weird or extraordinary situations we usually won't believe it, think it's a hoax of some kind, or adapt to the situation (either fight or running like hell) while not giving a single shit for other people. It shouldn't, but it happens
