You don't know whether the non-character's father is still alive at that point. Narratively, your party is small. That's just how the story plays out, and every single interaction starts to break down if you actually have ten allies accompanying you everywhere you go. It becomes especially egregious when Orin needs to kidnap someone and Yenna is the only target left. The number of companions you choose to recruit along the way is your own concern, but that is, once again, video game convenience. Temporary allies do not break the immersion established by that baseline, as I've already explained - they are literally part of the narrative. It's bizarre that you can recognize the arbitrary nature of a party size of four, but illogically conclude that having fourteen people in your gang is more "immersive."
