Oh, Mr. Anon. It is not so much that if Archie has no appeal, then IDW will have no appeal. The situation is far more bleak than that.
The core issue is that Mr. Ian Flynn is a former Archie staffer. He is not a fan of Actual, Existing, Sonic the Hedgehog, but a fan of a loose adaptation. His previous work is twice removed from the source, marking IDW thrice removed. This is the cancer that has been allowed to fester.
Archie, for all its terrible, out of character moments, at least had Ms. Sally. She could lead an organization and create action-adventure stories that succeeded at entertaining readers with rich worldbuilding and fun original characters. There were things to like outside of the colossal error of trying to anchor Mr. Sonic.
What does IDW have? It is the same fundamental error, but stripped of any interesting components. It is Mr. Flynn writing fanfiction, only this time with SEGA's blessing. It is a comic that desperately wants to be about a resistance, but SEGA has such cold feet that it will not allow the characters best suited for that story to appear. Nor will it allow them to seriously depict ongoing conflict. Instead, they have to write around the 'freedom fighters' with the 'restoration'. The result is this IDWslop, a product so mind-broken and out of character that it is, as you say, the least windy thing ever created. It is no wonder that anyone with taste would despise it. All it has 'going for it' are crying lesbians, inconsistent characterizations, and mangling the brand with fake plot progression and meaningless filler. At least things could develop in Archie, at least characters like Ms. Sally and crew could grow. The same cannot be said for Ms. Whisper and Ms. Tangle.
IDW Sonic appeals to no one. It is controlled by SEGA Staff who refuse to let it be Archie, and yet they hired almost exclusively Archie alumni to write for it. It begs the question of what they were thinking besides Flynn being willing to work for pennies.
