Mr. Sparky, you might be somewhat mistaken. I'm aware of developer commentary and secondary material. However, I do not think it should inform our opinions of the characters as they appear in the video games. Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game franchise for children. When it comes to these game characters and their writing, all that matters is what is depicted in the games. Since this is supposed to be an easily digestible series for children. If characters are mischaracterized within the video games, and their writing in the games does not reflect the creator's intentions... then that means something went wrong with the game's writing (from the creator's perspective, at least), but it does not mean that the creator's intentions triumph over the work itself. The game should be able to exist on it's own, stand by its own two feet, not rely on supplementary material and developer commentary to convey the 'vision'...

Ian makes characters say their established character trait out loud so that it looks like he understands them.
Notice that his Sonic mentions being "Free like the wind" out loud in different variations across IDW, Archie, and the DC Comic (Some variation of mentionining that he can't be tied down)
But Ian is the single writer who has tied down Sonic the most often.

Cream has always stayed true to herself, and her character. Amy's fluctuations in response to her mixed reception has left her a mangled shell. She is now a character that's supposed to love, that can't express her love. She's a walking contradiction that's now considered by many to be the lamest and most annoying character in the franchise.

Seeing Silver's comments about the Zeti while knowing about the dialog in Frontiers referencing Tangle and Sticks on top of the whole Mimic debacle, it really IS becoming apparent that Ian just puts unnecessary breadcrumbs and hopes other people will write it for him.

Amy has been affected by the same schizophrenic decision-making that everything and everyone in this franchise has been through. Cream was always boring as shit with an awful voice and stayed consistent because SEGA completely lost interest in using her at all.

Why is Silver seen as a Shadouge fankid? The only way that makes sense is if you force the DBZ parallels. Shadow isn't like Vegeta or even Sasuke. He has no interest in that sort of thing at all.
If Silver MUST be a descendant of a main character ( He isn't) then Sonic is the obvious example because Sonic is far more likely to reproduce than Shadow. Also narratively Sonic is literally the main character.

Not just any civilian can do what Ms. Cream does. Her importance comes from her ability to rise to the occasion and join the fight for justice, which is a notable contrast to every other civilian in the series. She is an inspirational figure.

And unlike Mr. Tails, who sought to be like Mr. Sonic, Ms. Cream follows his example by choice, balancing a normal life with her heroism. She is motivated by Justice, not by love or imitation. She is a younger, female Mr. Sonic who takes the initiative herself.

Look at what they did to Mr. Tails. The Meta Era was not kind to him. The writers, using Mr. Maekawa's work as a template, turned him into a stand-in for Ms. Sally. He became a tactician who fusses with a tablet and gets kidnapped. For Ms. Sally, who has no powers, relying on Mr. Sonic is understandable. For Mr. Tails, a hero in his own right, it is pathetic character regression.
And what of the other games? '06 did a disservice to its entire cast. Forces was a confused story that failed to use its characters properly. Being absent from a poorly written story is a greater kindness than being included only to be misused. Ms. Cream was spared the worst of the series' writing, which is more than can be said for Mr. Tails and Ms. Amy.

Her value is not determined by an appearance in a game that would fail her character. It is better to be absent than to be present and written poorly.

That doesn't mean Knuckles is unbeatable. Knuckles is the rival to Sonic, he is the Anti-Sonic. That means Sonic and Knuckles are evenly matched all around. But their specific stats or whatever the term is, is that Knuckles is as strong as Sonic is fast. SONIC is not as strong as Sonic is fast, Sonic is far faster than he is strong, his own strength does not equal his own speed.

Sonic does have super strength, just as Knuckles has super speed. But if Sonic = The Flash, and Knuckles' Power = Sonic's Speed, then Knuckles is basically Superman or Popeye or the Hulk.

SONIC is obviously not Superman, Popeye or the Hulk. Knuckles IS. But Sonic as a flash-tier speedster with some level of super strength as well, plus sheer skill and fighting prowess, is fully capable of matching Knuckles in a fight. Same applies to Shadow.

Knuckles is dedicated to Guarding the Master Emerald above all else, he is the Mountain. Yet he's plagued by many appearances where they just ignore it entirely just to have him appear.

Knuckles is a world renowned treasure hunter... How, exactly? When he has to guard the Master Emerald on Angel Island?

Knuckles is a martial arts master, a trained warrior. Who trained him? What specific martial arts does he use?

Everything about Knuckles is something they told us, not shown. The few times they do show us are few and far between. And, Knuckles has not been playable as often in gameplay that emphasizes any of his abilities properly, either.
