The appeal is pretty obvious, immersive simulation of some activity real or imagined, in your room at any time. Can I go to a range? Sure. Can I do it anytime the mood strikes me, like after I see some gun in a movie or TV show and want to shoot it, or to unwind after a shitty day? No. Can I use a huge variety of historic and current guns, or do stupid shit like this? No. VR is the closest thing to the real thing, especially with a stock.
