racing is probably the single most gameplay-focused genre out there, that's why it's so easy to screw up- if the one bit of the game that matters is bad, the whole game is bad, no matter how much content and polish you put on top it won't go anywhere if the wheels are square. that's why most kart racers suck. that's why most indie racers suck. they focus on the superfluous before the core, which works if you're making an rpg, but instantly disqualifies you if you are making a racer.
besides, if you need a good design for a car game, you can't beat, well, a car. everyone likes cars. adults like cars, kids like cars, women like cars, there isn't a single human on earth who can look at a viper and not think "this thing is fucking sick, i want a poster of it on my wall, a scale model on my deck, and a real one in my garage when i make it".
